Long term partner

National Gas

Delivering world-class infrastructure

A deep operational partnership with National Gas

Our technical expertise spans the full spectrum of asset lifecycle management, from maintenance and refurbishment of existing assets to design and construction of new builds, ensuring the reliability and safety of the National Transmission System (NTS) and supporting the transition towards a low-carbon gas network.

Creating a sustainable gas system

With a key focus on innovation and sustainability, our complex solutions encompass:

  • High-pressure pipeline diversions
  • Construction and refurbishment of above-ground installations (AGIs)
  • Asset refurbishment, full block-valve site replacements, pipe throughs, valve replacements and general site upgrades
  • New build compressor installations
  • Integrated Security Solution (ISS) upgrades
  • Decommissioning and demolition of redundant assets
  • Cathodic protection upgrades
  • Design and build projects

Asset health

One of our key workstreams, we deliver design and build services across multiple sites in the UK. This initiative addresses diminishing asset reliability and health across the NTS and encompasses a broad scope of work, including repair, overhaul, modifications, replacement, and demolition activities. We are currently working in Partnership with National Gas in the East region under the Asset Health Regional Partnership model.

Bacton – We recently commenced a 5-10 year Asset Health campaign on works at NG’s Upper Tier Control of Major Accident and Hazard (COMAH) Site, Bacton Gas Terminal. The Terminal is an asset of critical importance to the UK’s gas supply, receiving gas from the North Sea for UK domestic supply and also exporting to EU Interconnection points.

Decommissioning of strategic assets

We deliver large-scale decommissioning and demolition of sites across the NTS. Working collaboratively with key stakeholders to overcome challenges, develop innovative procedures, and ensure minimal disruption to the operational gas network. The programme prioritises safety, cost-efficiency, and sustainability by reusing materials and releasing land for future use, supporting the transition to a low-carbon future.

Compressor updgrades

We are supporting National Gas in replacing and upgrading its compressors on the NTS to ensure the pipeline network and assets continue to deliver the capabilities required across the country.

In 2023, we were awarded the enabling works, pipeline diversions and mechanical and civil packages associated with the new 60in Compressor install at Hatton Compressor Station, replacing two existing Units that no longer complied with the Industrial Emissions Directive. Over the two-and-a-half-year build, we were responsible for the new Station expansion, including installing the new Compressor and associated equipment, as well as the portal frame CAB building.

In 2025, we were awarded a contract to install a new 15MW Compressor at the Wormington Compressor Station. The project forms part of the Medium Plant Combustion Directive (MCPD), which aims to deliver increased sustainability and reduce air pollution.

Cathodic protection upgrades

We work closely with National Gas to deliver cathodic protection upgrade projects. These are design-and-build schemes driven by the need to upgrade deteriorating systems and to rectify P-type 1, 2, and 3 defects in the existing systems.

ISS

We are one of only four specialist suppliers on the National Gas ISS Security framework, which covers work to upgrade physical security and access control to National Gas Assets across the UK.

Case studies

Our projects…

Feeder 5 – innovation in gas pipeline construction

The Feeder 5 project was vast, and it is National Gas' biggest single feeder outage to date and the core construction works were completed within a six-week period with significant work either side to safely isolate the system, well ahead of schedule.

Saltley Viaduct – pipeline diversion project

United Infrastructure to deliver a complex gas pipeline diversion at Saltley Viaduct in Birmingham. The project commenced in August 2024 and was completed by March 2025.

Construction workers stood in large well in ground managing newly laid pipes

Hatton Compressor Station – Gas

United Infrastructure is delivering a major upgrade to a gas compressor station in Lincolnshire. The upgrade will make the station more environmentally friendly and help National Gas run the transmission system more efficiently.
