United Infrastructure is pleased to announce that it has commenced a major upgrade to the cathodic protection systems at the Bacton Gas Terminal, further strengthening the resilience of one of the UK’s most strategically important gas assets.
Delivered in partnership with National Gas, the £11 million programme of work will enhance corrosion protection across key buried steel pipelines at the North Norfolk terminal, supporting long-term asset integrity and operational reliability.
Cathodic protection is a proven corrosion prevention technique used to protect pipelines and other critical infrastructure buried in soil or submerged in water. By converting the structure into the cathode of an electrochemical cell, the system prevents corrosion before it can compromise performance or safety.
The works are being undertaken within a live gas environment on an Upper-Tier COMAH site, requiring detailed planning, specialist engineering expertise and strict safety controls. United Infrastructure brings significant experience in delivering asset health and integrity programmes across major UK gas terminals, including at St Fergus on the North East coast of Scotland.
Environmental management is embedded throughout the project, with a comprehensive Project Environmental Management Plan (PEMP) in place to ensure compliance with ISO 14001 standards and minimise environmental impact. The project will also deliver new job opportunities benefiting the rural East of England.
The project is expected to be completed in early 2028.
Conor Bray, Executive Director, Energy, United Infrastructure, said:
“We are proud to be supporting National Gas with this important cathodic protection upgrade at Bacton Gas Terminal. Delivering works of this complexity on a live gas installation demands technical expertise, robust planning and an uncompromising focus on safety.
“This programme will enhance pipeline resilience and corrosion protection, helping to safeguard the long-term integrity of this nationally significant asset and supporting the UK’s secure and stable gas supply.
“The project further reinforces United Infrastructure’s position as a trusted delivery partner for critical energy infrastructure programmes across the UK. ”
