United Living awarded multi-million-pound Ulverston gas pipeline project

United Living Infrastructure Services (ULIS) has been awarded a multi-million-pound gas pipeline diversion project by Cadent, the UK’s biggest gas distribution network, in Ulverston, South Lakeland, Cumbria.

The existing Ulverston to Barrow pipeline helps transport gas to tens of thousands of properties in the area. Assessments of the pipeline, along with a history of settlement and leakages have created a need to re-position the pipeline away from the canal embankment and within the adjacent field.

ULIS will install the new 850-metre 12” diversion in heavy wall steel pipe,  parallel with the existing pipeline but outside of the immediate embankment area. As a complex solutions provider, ULIS will complete the civil and mechanical installation of the diversion including a 75m long 1200mm diameter micro-tunnel below the Ulverston canal, ensuring minimal disruption to the surrounding area and maintaining safety standards.

Due to the working area being adjacent to Morecambe Bay European designated Ramsar, Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC), ULIS will ensure that appropriate steps are taken to ensure provisions are in place within the programme for scheduled visits from ecologists before any ecologically sensitive works.

Once this new pipeline is operational, the existing pipeline will be decommissioned. This will ensure no impact on gas supply while the work takes place, and Cadent can be confident of ensuring a long-term safe supply of gas to the local area.

Campbell Crawford, Managing Director, United Living Infrastructure Services, said:

“We are delighted that United Living Infrastructure Services has been selected to deliver this critical gas pipeline diversion project.

“We look forward to working closely with our long-term partner, Cadent to deliver this project safely, efficiently, and with minimal disruption to the local community in Ulverston.”

Paula Steer, Network Director for Cadent in the North West, Cadent, commented:

“We are pleased to have awarded United Living the contract to deliver this essential work to mitigate the risk associated with the deteriorating condition of the current pipeline’s location. It will ensure every customer in the local area continues to receive a reliable and safe gas supply for years to come”.
