Transforming a community garden for Uniting Friends

The project:

United Infrastructure delivered a meaningful community project to transform the outdoor space at Uniting Friends – a local charity providing support and a safe haven for vulnerable adults. What was once a neglected garden has been revitalised into a vibrant, welcoming space for the 60 people who visit the charity every day.

The project focused on transforming a dilapidated outdoor space into a safe and accessible garden area. Prior to the renovation, a large concrete slab and deteriorated garden features limited how the space could be used and prevented the charity from making full use of the area.

Working collaboratively, United Infrastructure and Cadent helped create a revitalised outdoor environment that will support social interaction, wellbeing activities and community engagement for years to come.

Our approach

Cadent funded all materials required for the renovation works, while United Infrastructure provided the labour, equipment and project management expertise needed to complete the transformation.

The project was delivered over the course of one week, with teams working closely together to ensure the space was completed to a high standard. Members of both project teams also attended a dedicated planting day, helping bring the final stages of the garden to life.

The completed garden is expected to benefit approximately 50–60 individuals on a daily basis, providing a much-improved outdoor environment for the charity and its visitors.

Outcomes and highlights

The most rewarding aspect of the project was the involvement of Uniting Friends beneficiaries during the planting day. Several members of the charity participated in the final touches, helping to personalise the garden space.

Their enthusiasm and pride in contributing highlighted the positive impact the renovation will have on the wider community. Beyond improving the physical environment, the project created opportunities for engagement, encouraged inclusion and helped build a shared sense of ownership of the garden.

Supporting local communities

The project brought together volunteers from United Infrastructure and Cadent, with five team members contributing several hours during the planting day to help complete the transformation. By working closely with community organisations and trusted partners, we continue to support initiatives that create meaningful social value and improve wellbeing for local residents.

Going above and beyond

In addition to the garden renovation, a new toilet block was constructed at the charity’s allotment site, which is used by Uniting Friends as part of its “Sprout There” initiative, which supports outdoor wellbeing days for attendees.
