United Living awarded major National Gas project at Wormington Compressor Station

United Living Infrastructure Services (ULIS) has been awarded a two-stage engineering, procurement and construction project aimed at reducing emissions at Wormington Compressor Station, Gloucestershire.

The strategically important Wormington facility is a crucial junction, linking gas import terminals in South Wales and supporting gas supply into South Wales and South West England.

The project forms part of the Medium Plant Combustion Directive (MCPD), which aims to improve air quality by reducing emissions from combustion plant including gas turbine driven compressor trains. The Wormington project will see the installation of a new, low emission gas turbine-driven compressor train built on land adjacent to the existing site, which includes a Siemens electric driven compressor that will be retained and two Siemens (formerly Rolls Royce) Avon-driven compressors that will be retained for emergency use on a limited 500 run hours per year basis.

The Wormington compressor project is a significant milestone for ULIS, which will oversee the civil, mechanical, electrical and control & instrumentation (EC&I) engineering development.

ULIS has a longstanding, collaborative relationship with National Gas. Its engineer-led expertise spans the full spectrum of asset lifecycle management, delivering complex projects successfully and safely across the UK.

Wormington MCPD is ULIS’s second major compressor station project with National Gas. The Hatton Compressor Station project in Lincolnshire is due for completion in 2025.

Campbell Crawford, Managing Director, United Living Infrastructure Services, said:

“We are delighted to have been appointed by National Gas to deliver this critical infrastructure project at the Wormington Compressor Station in Gloucestershire.

“Delivering world-class infrastructure is at the heart of everything we do at United Living, and we look forward to working collaboratively with National Gas and our engineering partner Kent to deliver this compressor project safely and successfully, ensuring the UK’s gas network is resilient and fit for the future.”

Darren Christie, Project Director, National Gas commented:

“We are delighted to partner with United Living and their wider supply chain on this critical part of our compressor replacement programme, with this work contributing to our business’s wider 2030 emissions reduction commitments.

“Our Wormington facility plays a vital role in linking gas import terminals in South Wales and South West England with our National Gas Transmission System. By utilising our project partners’ skills and expertise we can hope to see successful delivery of this investment. This will ultimately improve the compressor resilience at the site, providing greater energy security and helping reduce compressor emissions as part of the UK’s Net Zero ambitions.”
